Why Study in the USA

Considering studying in the USA? If so, you are in good company. Last year, 8,861 UK studentschose the States for their studies.

Why do so many students cross theAtlanticfor undergraduate courses? In a recent survey, we found British students were most attracted to theUSfor its liberal arts degrees (you don’t have to choose for you major for the first year) and the opportunity to experience American campus life. Cheer on your university's football (American that is) team to victory, join one of the many clubs on offer or even form your own! Studying abroad is not only a fun and exciting way to learn about a new culture, but also an investment in your future. More than half ofUKemployers favour graduate with overseas experience.

Application Process

Ideally, you will begin the process of investigating and applying for undergraduate study 1-1½ years before enrolment. First make sure US study is a good match for your goals. Then begin researching universities and narrow your search to your top four to six. With over 4,000 institutions offering bachelor’s degrees, you are bound to find one that is a good fit for you. Take into account majors on offer, location, costs and extracurriculars.

In the autumn before enrolment, begin preparing your applications. Deadlines can range from early November to late January. You will likely need to sit an admissions exam, either the SAT or ACT. Universities will also request a transcript listing your marks, as well as up to three letters of reference. Finally, you will complete two or three essays covering the admissions criteria: reasons you want to study your course and at the university, your school and community activities, leadership skills and career goals.
