2012 Tuition Fees Announced Today

Money

2012 tuition fees for full-time undergraduate courses in England are announced today (Tuesday 12 July).

They will apply to UK and other EU nationals entering universities and colleges in the academic year 2012–13 (not 2011–12).

Institutions will be permitted to charge £6,000, but where they plan to charge more they must provide financial support for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. This support will come in many forms, such as fee waivers, accommodation discounts, bursaries and scholarships, including a new National Scholarship Programme.

There will also be increased outreach activity to raise awareness and aspirations among students under-represented in higher education with a view to widening access and improving success. This might be through summer schools, more work in schools, mentoring and better advice and guidance.

You can see from the table below that the minimum course fees range from £1,000 to £9,000 and the maximum between £7,500 and £9,000, with an average across all institutions of £8,393. However, when all the financial support from the universities and colleges is taken into account, the actual average cost to students falls to £7,793.

Only eight institutions charging the maximum tuition fee of £9,000 will not be offering any fee waivers but will offer other financial support.
