Greenest universities presented with 'degrees' at parliament
Forty of the UK's greenest universities were presented with a first class degree 'certificate' at the first ever People & Planet Green League graduation ceremony held in parliament on 21 June. Leading environmentalist Jonathon Porritt and Caroline Lucas, the UK's first green MP, presented the degrees.
At the graduation ceremony, People & Planet also presented the findings of a brand new report on the progress made in greening the higher education sector over the past six years. The report's findings show huge sustainability improvements across the sector, but suggest that a lack of investment at national level is holding back progress on carbon reduction within the sector.
The University of Greenwich topped the People & Planet Green League 2012, with the University of Plymouth in second place and the University of Brighton taking third place. The People & Planet Green League is the UK's only comprehensive and independent green ranking of universities compiled annually by the country's largest student campaigning organisation.
The Complete University Guide League Tables include a green score for each institution, provided courtesy of People & Planet (although note that the Green Score is not one of the nine measures used to compile the University League Table rankings). The Guide also includes useful profiles of the UK's higher education institutions, including the University of Greenwich, the University of Plymouth and the University of Brighton.
