History

  • The RAC was the first agricultural college in the English speaking world.
  • Queen Victoria granted the Royal Charter to the College in 1845.
  • Sovereigns have been patrons ever since, visiting the college in every reign. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales became President in 1984.
  • The College motto is Avorum Cultus Pecorumque, meaning 'caring for the fields and the beasts'. The College continues to enact its educational, research and consultancy commitment in keeping with this motto.

Location and transport

  • The campus is situated one mile from the centre of the Cirencester, in the heart of the beautiful Cotswold countryside.
  • During term time, a free shuttle bus rus between Cirencester and the College.
  • London is just 90 minutes by rail.
  • The College is often referred to as 'the Oxbridge of the Countryside'. The main quadrangle sits alongside the 16th-century tithe barn and farmhouse, in 10 hectares (25 acres) of manicured grounds.

Academic strengths

  • School of Agriculture, School of Business, School of Real Estate and Land Management.
  • An extensive network of student placement sponsors, in the UK and overseas. All students on business, equine and agriculture courses are required to undertake a 20-week work placement.
  • In just six months after leaving the College, 96.6% of recent graduates were in employment or further education.
  • These impressive rates of employability continue for our Masters graduates, of whom 97% were employed within six months of graduation.

Student facilities, including library and computing

  • The College farms are based at two locations: Coates and Harnhill. Totalling 491 heactares in size (1,200 acres), they offer very different farming system situations.
  • Specialist labs and facilities are available alongside a well-stocked library and state-of-the-art computer suites.
  • All teaching material are available to students 24/7 through the online portal.

Students' Union

  • Many different clubs and societies, including different sports teams. Students are able to start new clubs and societies.
  • There are four major balls held each year, considered to be amongst the country's finest.

Sport

  • Full range of sports teams, competing in the BUCS league.
  • New in 2011 – Sailing Club.

Recent/prospective new builds

  • A £3.5 million capital investment has taken place around the campus over the last year. This has included:
  • A new state-of-the-art teaching block, including seven new lecture rooms.
  • A biomass district heating system, which heats the library, lecture blocks and computer labs and is also used as a learning resource for teaching.
  • New accommodation block with an additional 50-en suite self-catered room.
  • Postgraduate study centre.

Availability of part-time work

  • A wide range of part-time work is available both in the college and in Cirencester. Many students work both during term tie and in the holidays.
