History
- Originating
from a small mechanics institution (Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts)
founded in 1825, the institution grew by converging and amalgamating with
different colleges and eventually became the Liverpool Polytechnic.
- In 1992,
the Polytechnic became Liverpool John Moores University, one of the UK's new
generation universities.
- In 2007,
LJMU launched a globally unique model of higher education, which stresses
work-related learning and graduate skills development in tandem with effective
employer engagement.
Location and Transport
- LJMU is a
thriving, vibrant university located at the heart of Liverpool.
- The university has three main campuses: both the City and Mount Pleasant Campuses
are based in the city centre; the IM
Marsh Campus is located approximately 6.4km (4 miles) south of the city centre.
- Liverpool
is well served by public transport (ferry, taxi, rail, bus coach and
underground).
- LJMU also
operates a free shuttle bus which takes students to sites across the university.
Accommodation
- All new LJMU students – even those
who apply through Clearing – are guaranteed a city-centre bedroom.
- All of the student accommodation
consists of individual study bedrooms within shared flats alongside other LJMU
students. Most rooms now also have private en-suite bathrooms. The
accommodation is all self-catering.
- Liverpool has a surplus of
accommodation of all types and so all students have a choice for their later
years.
- Provision for students with
disabilities is improving and LJMU has accommodation that is wheelchair
accessible and suitable for students with visual or hearing impairments.

Bursaries and Scholarships

Bursaries
- According to figures published by The
Office for Fair Access (OFFA), LJMU spends more than the sector average on
supporting lower income and other disadvantaged students.
- If your household income is less than
£25,000 you will qualify for a bursary of £1,075 per year. If it is between
£25,001 and £50,020 you will qualify for a bursary of £430 per year.
- You can spend this bursary as you wish,
towards your everyday living costs, to pay off part of your tuition fees or to
reduce the amount of student loan that you take out. LJMU bursaries are paid
automatically to eligible students -you do not need to apply for them.
- If you are a Home student and have studied
in higher education prior to September 2009 and are paying the £3,225 fee you
will be eligible for a bursary of £1,075 provided your household income is
below £18,360. If your household income is between £18,361 and £39,333
you will be eligible for a bursary of £430.

Scholarships
- Vice Chancellor's Award: This highly
prestigious award is presented to students who are both academically gifted and
who have achieved a level of excellence in other areas that set them apart from
their peers. A maximum of six awards are made each year. Successful students
receive £10,000 a year for the duration of their course.
- Dream Plan Achieve Scholarships: These
scholarships are targeted at outstanding students who achieve a minimum of 360
UCAS points in three subjects. Students who qualify for the scholarship receive
£1,000 a year for the duration of their degree.
- Achievers Awards: Scholarships of £1,000 a
year are available for students who can show a level of commitment,
determination and achievement in areas such as the arts, sports, citizenship or
volunteering.
- Sports Scholarships: These scholarships
harness LJMU's internationally-respected sports science research and combine it
with targeted learning support to help students who are also top-level sporting
stars achieve both their sporting and academic potential.
Student mix
- Two
thirds of undergraduate students are eligible for a LJMU bursary, indicating
they come from lower income households as are over 65% of LJMU scholarship
winners.
- Students
recruited from c.106 countries.
- 11% of
undergraduate students are classified as a having a Black and Minority Ethnic
background.
- 8% of
undergraduates are recorded as having a disability.

- Irrespective
of the degree studied, all undergraduate students are encouraged to become
expert in up to eight graduate skills, applicable to a wide range of
professions and careers.
- Students
are also encouraged to take their work-related skills up to the next level,
gaining higher 'world of work' or 'WoW' skills identified, not by LJMU but by
leading national and international employers and business experts.
- No other
university, either in the UK or internationally, offers students the chance to
develop these WoW skills or gives them the opportunity to have their abilities
verified through an employer-validated Skills Statement.

- At the last RAE in 2001, LJMU had over
20 areas of international or national research excellence.

Academic strengths
- LJMU is
the only institution in the North West of England to be awarded Skillset Media
Academy status.
- The only
UK university with a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in PE,
Dance, Sport and Exercise Sciences.
- Other key
areas include: public health, teacher education, subjects allied to medicine,
engineering, computing science, astrophysics, sport and exercise sciences.
- LJMU
stands apart from other universities in the UK because of its extensive links
with employers operating in all sectors of the economy.
- LJMU's
facilities are designed to replicate 'world of work' environments so that
students can gain the key skills and experience relevant to their chosen
career. These include science, technology and engineering laboratories, TV
studios, a forensic scene-of-crime lab, theatre and rehearsal facilities, a
mock courtroom, clinical practice suites and an art gallery.
- All LJMU
students complete form of work-related learning as part of their degree.

- LJMU's dedicated Graduate
Development Centre operates as the 'hub' for all of the university's student
employability initiatives, including year round, free Ready for Work training
sessions and workshops.
- LJMU has three modern Learning
Resource Centres, and the two largest LRCs are open 24 hours a day, seven days
a week in University term-times. Every subject, every topic, every interest is
covered in the Learning Resource Centres - in formats ranging from DVD and CD,
to journals, satellite TV programmes, magazines, and of course books, both
print and electronic.
- LJMU's virtual learning
environment, Blackboard, gives students links to materials such as assignments,
lecture notes, useful Internet sites and other multimedia resources.
- Over 2,000 workstations are available
in the LRCs and student open-access facilities.
- 100% of student rooms are wired
for internet access.

Students’ Union
- The
Liverpool Students' Union has over 50 clubs and societies to choose from,
ranging from the Islamic, Cheerleading and Snowriders societies to the
Freestyle Dance, American Football and Jiu Jitsu Clubs.
- The
Union's 'Give a It Go' events include trips to the Lakes and further a field,
speed dating, ski and snowboarding weekends as well as more traditional
fundraising events.
- The Union's
Advice Centre also provides a free, independent and confidential
student-centred service which can help students find solutions to any problems
they may while at LJMU, such as issues with their landlord, worries about their
course or how to best manage their money. This advice service is additional to
that offered by the University's Student Welfare Services team.
Sport
- LJMU's sports facilities are
situated on the IM Marsh campus which is located in the leafy suburb just a few
miles from the city centre.
- The facilities include 25m pool, astro pitch, indoor sports hall, 2 gymnasiums, 2 dance studios, fitness room (equipped with CV and resistance
machines), rugby pitch, football pitch, practise field, outdoor netball courts, outdoor tennis courts.

Recent/prospective new builds
- In 2002,
LJMU launched its 10-year campus redevelopment programme. Once completed in
2012, the university will have invested £200 million in upgrading existing
properties and developing new buildings.
- Recent developments include a new £24million Art and Design Academy (due
to open in January 2009) and a new £22.5million life sciences building where facilities will include an indoor 70-metre running track and labs for
testing cardio-vascular ability, motor skills and bio-mechanics functions.
The building will also have additional biochemistry and psychology
teaching labs.
- New social learning zones for each of LJMU's three
main campuses.
Availability of part-time work
- Excellent availability of part-time work in Liverpool.
- Workbank
is situated in the main Student Union building and can find part-time work for
students in a broad range of jobs, fitting the work around students' academic
commitments.
- Business
Bridge helps students find paid, part-time work experience in local businesses.
Established over 10 years ago, Business Bridge is a partnership between the three Liverpool Universities – Liverpool Hope, John Moores University, The University
of Liverpool – and The University of Chester.
