History

  • Originally founded as an institution of higher education in 1834 and awarded university charter as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963.
  • Following a re-branding exercise in 2006, the university's official trading name is now Newcastle University.

Accommodation

  • There are over 3,500 rooms, ranging from halls of residence with meals provided, to self-catered flats or houses.
  • The university has a number of rooms for students with special requirements such as mobility or health problems, and rooms for couples and families.
  • The weekly rate for a place in university-owned halls/houses is between £69.79 and £107.17 self-catered (minimum price for ensuite £86.87), and between £98.84 and £116.55 (minimum price for ensuite £116.55) inclusive of meals. The average private rent is £64 per week.

Entry standards
League Table

  • In general, entry standards are high, with most courses asking for BBB or higher at A level (or equivalent). Offers of places on any degree are made on the basis of individual achievement, ability and potential to succeed.
  • In addition to considering evidence of ability such as exam performance, the university also looks at other evidence in UCAS applications that indicate potential to succeed on a degree programme.

Bursaries and Scholarships

  • Tuition fees (2010): £3,290
  • Academic Achievement Bursary – £750 per year if the student achieves three or more grade A passes at A Level* on entry, £300 per year if the student achieves two or more grade A passes at A Level* on entry. *Or equivalent other qualification. Students must be eligible for an Undergraduate Bursary in order to be eligible for an Achievement Bursary.
  • Newcastle University Excellence Scholarships – cash awards, normally available for one year only. Across the university as a whole, we expect to award scholarships for students entering the university in 2010 worth approximately £190,000 in total across Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Agriculture and Engineering and Medical Sciences. There will also be a number of scholarships available within Medical Sciences. The value of the awards varies up to £2,400. The amount and criteria of award will depend on the subject being studied.
  • Sports Scholarships – consist of up to 20 Recruitment Sports Scholarships from £1,000 to £1,500 and up to 20 Performance Sport Scholarships of £1,000 per year.
  • Placement year and year abroad tuition fee is 25% of the full tuition fee, therefore by current figures this would be £822.50.
  • Students who are eligible for the Newcastle University Undergraduate Bursary of £1,500 or £750 may also be awarded the Newcastle University Achievement Bursary and/or additional bursaries on taking up their undergraduate student place.
  • Eligibility for bursaries will be assessed using UUK/SLC model bursary scheme (HEBSS).

Course flexibility

  • Approximately 200 undergraduate degrees to choose from. Some courses cover several subjects. This facilitates interdisciplinary learning and means that students can choose a course that really suits their needs.
  • This flexibility also extends to the way courses are taught and students’ individual study experience will vary depending on the course chosen.

  • All courses are reviewed regularly to ensure they reflect the most recent subject developments and include employer input where necessary.
  • The university was highly praised in the latest national Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Institutional Audit in 2005, particularly for its support and guidance of students throughout their academic studies.
  • Newcastle University has continued to improve its performance in the annual National Student Survey (NSS) 2009, with 87% of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing that they were satisfied with the overall quality of their course. The figure has risen every year and is above the national average of 81%. This is despite the national average decreasing by 1% to 81%.

Research standards

  • A member of the elite Russell Group, an association of leading research-intensive UK universities.
  • The university received the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for research into ageing and health. It is continuing to address this theme throughout 2009/10 through a campaign called 'Changing Age', which calls for changes around the way politicians and the wider public perceive an ageing population.
  • Newcastle University regularly hits the headlines with its ground-breaking research in areas such as stem cell technology, nanotechnology, water pollution, the threat to marine ecosystems and urban regeneration in Iraq.

  • 1,300 PCs across campus, including two clusters in halls and two clusters which provide 24-hour access. Academic schools provide another 750, and on-campus connectivity for PCs includes wireless access over most of the main campus. 100% of student bedrooms are wired for internet access.
  • The university library is the only one in the UK to be awarded the government's Charter Mark for excellent customer services five times in a row.
  • The university libraries have over 1 million books, 15,000 electronic journals, 2000 study places, and a computerised online catalogue.
  • We are a leading university in providing technology-based support for our students. Our Blackboard virtual learning system allows students to submit work online, access reading lists, take part in online discussions and e-mail their academic tutors. The ReCap lecture recording service allows students to review lectures and other recorded materials, enhancing their understanding of complex topics and assisting their exam revision.

Students’ Union

  • The Union Society is the social hub of the university - whether it's a quick bite to eat, gigs featuring favourite bands, support and advice, or just a place to chill out with friends, the union's got it covered.
  • Six bars including a 1,500 capacity basement venue, four catering outlets and three shops and a post office, not to mention the Student Advice Centre, the volunteering network Student Community Action Newcastle (SCAN), the student newspaper the Job Shop, and much more.
  • The building is owned by, run by and designed to be used by the student body. It is run by recent graduates who are elected each year and every single student has the opportunity to have their say and make decisions about what's going on. 
  • Over 180 societies and sports clubs are supported by the Union.

Sport

Newcastle University: students

  • Newcastle University is ranked tenth nationally by British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS)
  • The sports centre incorporates a double-court sports hall with a state-of-the-art 125-station health and fitness suite, three activity halls, four squash courts and a dance studio. Five sports sites located in and around the city include pitches and courts for outdoor games, a floodlit all-weather pitch, an 18-hole golf course, and the university boat house based on the River Tyne.
  • A strong Performance Sport Strategy supports performance and participation at all levels and in a wide variety of sports within the university.
  • All students have the opportunity to participate in sports activities through an intramural sports league where students can create their own teams.
  • The University has an Elite Athletes Squad whose former members include Olympic Gold medallist Ed Goode and rugby player Tom May.

Recent/prospective new builds

  • As one of the UK's leading universities we are committed to providing the best student services and facilities and have invested a massive £200 million in improving the campus in recent years.
  • A new £35-million building called King's Gate opened in 2009, providing some of the best student facilities to be found in the UK in a single location and a new 'front door' to the University which is clearly visible in the city centre. The building houses many of the main student and administrative services including the Careers Service, Accommodation Service, Student Wellbeing Service and Student Progress Service. A number of environmentally friendly features are part of the building design.
  • The University is a leading partner in the development of the Great North Museum: Hancock, which is adjacent to campus. The museum opened in May 2009 and received over 300,000 visitors in less than three months. This exciting project has involved the extension and total refurbishment of the Hancock Museum, to create a flagship visitor attraction for the region, as well as a valuable research facility for students of natural history, archaeology and classics.
  • A new Music Building opened in 2009, which will support the development of Newcastle University as one of the leading research and teaching centres for creative practice and theory, both in the UK and internationally.
  • Newcastle University has welcomed the first 160 students at its international branch campuses in Malaysia and Singapore and will launch a third programme in Dubai in 2010.
  • Castle Court, which is a new accommodation block at Castle Leazes, opened in December 2009. The site is within walking distance from campus and provides an extra 98 self catered en- suite rooms over 7 floors, each floor containing two flats, with seven en-suite bedrooms per flat.

Availability of part-time work

  • Newcastle’s popularity as a regional centre and national tourist destination means that there are plenty of part-time work opportunities available for students. The Careers Service helps students find part-time work while they are studying and full-time work in the holidays. 
  • The Careers Services’ Vacancies Online is a job search facility which offers vacation work, placements and internships. Their North East Graduate Directory is a searchable directory of over 600 graduate employers in the North East, with information on whether they offer vacation work, part-time work, and placement opportunities. The Careers Service also runs the Newcastle Work Experience programme, offering Newcastle University students 100-hour, project based placements in North East SMEs.
