History

  • Dates back to 1862 when the Hartley Institution, as it was originally known, was established in the centre of Southampton.
  • Hartley Institution became Hartley University College and moved out of the city centre in 1919.
  • Received its Royal Charter to award degrees and became the University of Southampton in April 1952.

Location and Transport

  • South coast of England, close to the New Forest and the Isle of Wight. Just over one hour by train from London.
  • Main campus north of city centre, adjacent to Southampton Common’s 326 acres of managed woodland.
  • Excellent road, rail, sea and air links. Southampton Airport nearby. University-owned bus service provides transport across the city.

Accommodation

  • 5,200 places across 20 professionally managed halls of residence. Over £19 million invested in refurbishing halls last year.
  • On-campus rents: self-catered options between £67 and £122 per week; catered options between £102 and £129 per week.

Entry standards
League Table

  • Applicants normally expected to achieve three A Level passes or equivalent.
  • Applicants also need to satisfy admissions tutor(s) that their academic qualifications are sufficient for them to cope with programme of study.

  • Tuition fees (2010): £3,290.
  • Tuition fees for year abroad are £1,640.
  • Up to 150 bursaries of £1,000 awarded to students meeting certain criteria who live in Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
  • Thirty annual widening-participation bursaries of £1,000 to BM6 (Bachelor of Medicine widening access programme) medical students.
  • Many subject-specific scholarships.
  • Twenty-two per cent of additional fee income to be earmarked for bursaries.
  • Eligibility for bursaries will be assessed using UUK/SLC model bursary scheme (HEBSS).

Student mix

  • For full time undergraduates in 2006/07: female 56%, male 44%; mature students 20%; international 13%; state schools 83%.
  • On average there are 7 applications per place; however individual courses vary.


Course flexibility

  • The university offers more than 250 degree programmes, covering over 70 subject areas.
  • Single honours, focusing on one main subject and combined honours, for those who want the flexibility and variety of knowledge/skills offered by studying a combination of subjects.

Students’ Union

  • More than 120 clubs and societies on offer. Hosts live music, club nights, karaoke, comedy and international nights.
  • Union complex offers four bars, Cube nightclub, café, mini-mart, banks, hair and beauty salon, travel centre, cinema, campus market.

Sport

  • 140-station fitness suite, 25-m swimming pool, two sports halls, four squash courts, martial arts and multi-purpose studios; indoor climbing wall.
  • Other facilities include grass, sand-based and rubber-crumb pitches, eight tennis courts, six netball courts.
