History
- Southampton Solent University (SSU) gained university status in July 2005, having previously been known as Southampton Institute.
- Its origins can be traced to a private School of Art founded in 1855, which became Southampton College of Art.
- Mergers with the Southampton College of Technology and the College of Nautical Studies led to the establishment of Southampton Institute in 1984.

Location and Transport
- The main campus enjoys a lively city centre location, close to Southampton’s nightlife, shops, entertainment and cultural landmarks.
- Southampton is just over an hour from London, and a short distance from Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Winchester and the New Forest.
- The Warsash Maritime Academy and Watersports Centre are ideally located at the mouth of the River Hamble.
Accommodation
- Modern, purpose built student residences within walking distance of the main campus and built between 1993 and 1996.
- 2,300+ single study bedrooms (en-suite and non en-suite). Flat and traditional layouts. Bills and broadband included.
- All full-time students can apply. Currently no distance or postcode criteria. In 2008–09, all first year students who received an unconditional offer were allocated a place in accommodation. Accommodation is available to second and third years.

Entry standards
League Table
- The average UCAS Tariff Points on entry was 225 (2006).
- 74% of full-time first degree entrants have A Levels as their highest qualification.
- SSU offers open access to those without formal qualifications, in particular mature students with previous work experience.

- Tuition fees (2010): £3,290.
- Placement year tuition fee is half the annual tuition fee. Year abroad fee is full annual tuition fee.
- Local scholarships of £250 for students domiciled in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and also for students admitted form Compact colleges.
- Various bursaries and scholarships will be available for students who are from local regions, the Channel Islands, overseas and the students on the University’s STAND (Solent Talented Athlete Network Development) programme, as well as the University’s Alumni.

Student mix
- 57% male and 43% female, although these vary by individual faculty.
- Full-time population comprises 87% of students from the UK and 13% who are non-UK residents.
- 96% of full-time undergraduate entrants are from state schools, 36% are lower socio-economic groups, and 18% are from ethnic minorities.
- For every place on a full-time undergraduate course there are 3.4 applications (2007).
Course flexibility
- Full- and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate courses, short and CPD courses and Foundation degrees.
- Virtual Learning Environment ‘myCourse’ gives access to online teaching materials, information, news and notices about students' individual course units.
- MSc Six Sigma course has a ‘roll on, roll off’ structure.
Teaching standards League Table
- QAA Institutional Audit (March 2006) – highest possible rating of broad confidence.
- In 2005–06 (as in previous years) all external examiners confirmed that the academic standards of the university’s awards continued to be appropriate, secure and comparable.
Research standards League Table
- More than 100 PhDs awarded to date, with a further 100 students currently studying towards MPhil or PhD.
- Research and scholarship encompasses the criteria of: innovation, peer review, public domain and informing the curriculum.
Academic strengths
- A distinctive curriculum, with emphasis on real world and real work learning experiences, giving graduates research and employability skills.
- 93.8% of graduates gained employment in 2006–07, an increase of 0.3% on the previous year, and graduate level employment and/or study rose to 57.6%.
- More than 60 of our courses are accredited by professional bodies.

- Modern library facilities with collections of paper-based and electronic publications, supported by approachable staff committed to helping students.
- Learning centres and a dedicated wireless network provides students with the IT resources, both PC and Mac, they require to succeed.
- The online student portal provides a single point of access to personalised information, the university’s on line learning environment, email, library and much more.

- Solent Students' Union (SU) is the hub of social activities for students including: SU Additions, Big Night Out, organisation of clubs and societies and student media such as Re:sus.

Sport
- Purpose built watersports centre opened in 2006 serving both university academic and public courses in keelboat, dinghy and powerboat.
- Developing football ground to FA step 6 grade to accommodate progression in non-league football.
- New five-storey sports facility at planning stage with anticipated opening in 2011, catering for the university and local community.
- Team Solent yachting team, former world champions, were crowned BUSA National Yachting Champions 2008, successfully defending their title for the sixth time in eight years.

- The university recently made a £1.8-million pound investment in facilities to support new courses.
- Sports Science – new physiology and motor performance labs enabling fitness testing, ergonomics and biometric analysis, new haematology lab.

- Media and Fashion Styling – new wet room with hair washing and styling stations. New photographic studio and computer suite.
