History

  • The university was given its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965. It is situated on a campus which straddles the boundary between the Coventry and the County of Warwickshire.
  • The idea for a university in Coventry was mooted after the Second World War but it was a partnership of the city and the county which brought the university into being.
  • The university initially admitted graduate students in 1964 and took its first 450 undergraduates in October 1965. In October 2007 the university had over 20,200 students.

Location and Transport

  • Located in the heart of England, adjacent to the city of Coventry – 5 km (3 miles) from the city centre – and on the border with Warwickshire.
  • The campus lies within a few miles of the M40, M45 and M6 motorways and is a 20 minute drive from Birmingham International Airport.

  • 5,779 campus rooms, 1,678 off-campus bed spaces managed by Warwick Accommodation and 151 staff and family houses/flats.

  • Minimum costs for 2008–09: £70 per week for 30 weeks (£2,100.00 pa) or £70.00 per week for 39 weeks (£2,730.00 pa).

Academic achievement  Scholarship

  • Tuition fees (2010): £3,290.
  • Placement year tuition fees and year abroad tuition fees is 50% full-time fee excluding ERASMUS.
  • Warwick Scholarships of £1,500 a year will be awarded to independent students and students from families with incomes less than £36,001 a year through the Warwick Undergraduate Aid Programme (WUAP).
  • In addition to the Warwick Scholarships, a limited number of Alumni and Friends' Named Scholarships worth up to £2,000 a year will be open to application from independent students and students from families who receive means tested benefits or Pension Credit.
  • Twenty-five per cent of additional fee income to be earmarked for bursaries.

Course flexibility

  • Warwick Skills Certificate offers all students accredited training in professional and employability skills.
  • All courses are built around core and optional modules. Some courses allow students to take additional modules to add breadth and depth to their studies.
  • All undergraduate degrees offer either an integrated industrial/work experience year or the opportunity to take a year out for work experience.

Teaching standards

  • Excellent teaching recognised in audits and inspections. 
  • Home to two national Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning: the Reinvention Centre for Undergraduate Research, and the CAPITAL Centre, working with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
  • Strong student feedback arrangements including long-standing Student-Staff Liaison Committee system for students to say what they think about courses and facilities.

  • Warwick is ranked 5th in the UK for research having 6 top rated 5* departments and 19 5 rated departments in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.
  • 5* departments are Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Theatre & Cultural Policy Studies, Warwick Business School, English & Comparative Literary Studies.

Sport

  • Sporting life is vibrant and ranges from ‘traditional’ outdoor sports to an indoor climbing centre. 
  • 75 sports clubs are available to students.
  • The sports centre includes a 25m, 6-lane swimming pool, squash courts, fitness centre, two sports halls, dance and aerobics studios and the ‘Bear Rock’ climbing and bouldering centre.

  • £116-million investment in new buildings and redevelopments over the next 4-5 years including: £3.4-million acquisition of Argent Court; £5.5-million on building a new Clinical Trials Unit; £7-million redevelopment of the Butterworth Hall and Warwick Arts Centre
