Going to University in Wales

For home/EU students the maximum chargeable by a Welsh university is £9,000 in 2013.
For international students a different scale of fees is chargeable.
All universities clearly show course fees on their websites and you should check carefully so that you know exactly what it will cost to study the course you have chosen.
You should apply for student finance as soon as the cycle begins in order to guarantee that funds are available when you begin your course.
Note that if you have done a course of higher education before, this may affect the level of support you are entitled to.

You apply to Student Finance Wales for a loan of up to £3,575.
A new Fee Grant will pay the balance of the tuition fee up to a maximum grant of £5,425 if a tuition fee of £9,000 is charged.
After you have graduated you will start re-paying the loan once you are earning more than £21,000 per year.
Your local authority student finance office will assess your eligibility for support and the Student Loans Company (SLC) will handle the payments.

You apply to Student Finance England for a loan to cover your tuition fees. This loan is not means tested.
SLC pays your tuition fees direct to your university.
After you have graduated you will start re-paying the loan once you are earning more than £21,000 per year.

You apply to SAAS for a loan to cover your tuition fees.
You can choose to take out a student loan to pay all or some of your fees.
After you have graduated you will start re-paying the loan once you are earning over £16,365 a year.
You can make extra voluntary payments straight to the SLC to reduce your loan quicker.

You apply to Student Finance NI for a loan to cover your tuition fees.
After you have graduated you will start re-paying the loan once you are earning over £16,365 a year.
You can make extra voluntary payments straight to the SLC to reduce your loan quicker.

You may be eligible for a tuition fee loan and a tuition fee grant.
If you're an EU student applying for help only with tuition fees you need to complete an application form by the deadline date and send it to the Student Finances Services European Team at Student Finance Services European Team, PO Box 89, Darlington DL1 9AZ; telephone (+44) (0) 141 243 3570.
If relevant, you should include any evidence with your application – for example, proof of identity.
