Landlord is asking for a full year's rent up front. Is this legal?

My landlord is asking me to pay now a full year rent for a contract starting in October 2015.
Is this legal? Otherwise he will increase the rent.

I'd check your contract, this sounds very unusual but if that's the deal you signed then maybe this is OK. I very much doubt he can up the rent unless this is stipulated on the contract.

NOTE we are not experts on this. Speak to your Students' Union or university accommodation office for advice, they'll be more than familiar with the protocol here.
