Can a student defer an offer even if it's for medicine?

My son has two conditional offers for medicine - he is wondering whether he can take a gap year and defer entry.
Answered by Alison Patterson
It may be possible but he should consult universities immediately.

It is up to them whether they are willing to move the offer to 2016 entry and the more notice they have the better. But he should be clear about his reasons for deferring.

Remember medicine is a popular course with tough entry requirements, so deferring may not be as easy as for other courses. But we cannot speak on behalf of the UK's medical schools. Definitely worth trying if he really does want to defer!
