Advice re GCSE choices

Is an EBacc combination of GCSE choices still favoured by the top ranked universities for students applying for Electrical/Electronics Engineering degree courses?

For two of her subjects, my daughter is considering selecting GCSE Computing and a Design Technology GCSE incorporating Product Design, Resistant Materials and Graphic design. Would she be better off by selecting, for example, History or Geography instead of one of these to make her choices a true EBacc?

She is targeted A* or levels 8/9 in all four so this isn't really an influencing factor, and she wants to study Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A Level. I would be grateful for any advice/guidance you can provide as I have heard many conflicting opinions re this.

Many thanks.

Hi Mandy,

The right subjects and the right performance at A level are going to be far more important than GCSEs – especially for a subject like Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

A department will not care much about whether she has History or Geography GCSE – they will only care about Further Maths and Physics.

Good to luck to your daughter with her application!
