Why do university league tables differ so much between publications?

For overall score in your league table, it says that St Andrews is fourth, above places like Edinburgh and Glasgow. However in the QS World rankings, St Andrews is well below both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Why do university league tables differ so much between publications?
Answered by Alison Patterson
We all use different criteria for ranking universities.

I think you will find that QS uses criteria like the number of Nobel prize winners, whereas our rankings, which are more targeted at applicants for first degree courses, focus on criteria associated with undergraduates.

Our methodology is at:

It is really important that you know what you are looking at when reading rankings; you should always do your own research.
