Clearing Success Story – Ahmed, University of Salford
23 year old Ahmed Rafiq from Manchester is currently studying Accounting and Finance with Professional Experience at the University of Salford. He got his place successfully through Clearing – read on to find out more.
What degree had you originally applied for and where?
I originally applied to study Economics at the University of Birmingham.
What circumstances led you to entering Clearing? If applicable, tell us about the ups and downs of A Level results day.
At college, I decided I wanted to study a business-related course at university. I particularly enjoyed studying Economics at A Level, so I initially applied to study this at the University of Birmingham. After sitting my A Levels, I waited for my results. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the required grades, so I decided to go down the Clearing route instead. I’d heard some good things about the University of Salford and after speaking to a Clearing advisor I decided to take up a place on their Accounting and Finance degree.
Did you do any preparation or research before Results Day?
I hadn’t done much preparation beforehand as I expected to get my predicted grades. However, I did know a bit about the University of Salford through family members and when I called Salford’s Clearing hotline, the advisor explained the process to me.
Where did you go for help and support throughout the process?
I got a lot of information from the University of Salford’s website. It contained advice about the process and had examples of real students who’d been through Clearing.
How did you find out what courses were available?
I simply contacted the university and enquired. They directed me to the UCAS Clearing page and Salford’s own clearing website, talking me through the courses available. They helped me to pick the course that was right for me.
What factors made you finally settle on the course you chose?
I felt really comfortable speaking to the Clearing advisors. They put me through to the programme leader and after discussing the course content with them, I decided to accept a place. Knowing that Accounting and Finance is professionally accredited at Salford also influenced my decision.
Did the university offer a Clearing open day? If you went, was it helpful and did it alleviate any concerns you had?
The university did offer a Clearing open day but I wasn’t able to attend. I would recommend attending an open day if you are able to, however. Salford has a specific open day which is open to applicants who’ve received an offer through Clearing.
Did you find a place to live easily?
I commuted to university from home during my first two years, but in my final year I lived in Salford. There are great options for accommodation in and around campus, so it’s easy to find a place you’ll love.
How has your time at university been? Has it delivered what you were looking for and are you happy?
The programme exceeded my expectations. There was lots of support available from both academic and support staff. There’s also so much to do in Manchester and Salford, and lots of ways to get involved in university life. I’ve had an amazing time here.
How has your course supported or changed your career ambitions?
My course has helped me secure a place on a graduate scheme, which will give me the opportunity to become a charted accountant and enable me to work internationally. The course is tailored to the real-life experiences I’ll face in the professional world. It’s given me and other students the knowledge and skills we need to get contracts with high profile FTSE 100 companies.
