Clearing Success Story – Jacky, University of Greenwich
Jacky, from Deptford, South London, used Clearing to get onto a Film Studies course at the University of Greenwich.
What circumstances led you to entering Clearing?
I always get the bus past the university’s Greenwich Campus. I saw the building one time and thought ‘Oh my gosh, this place is incredible’. I came to understand that the college I’d originally applied to wasn’t well suited to my preferences so I decided to apply for a Film Studies course at Greenwich through Clearing.
How did you find out what courses were available?
I had a look at the university’s website to see which courses had spaces.
Where did you go for help and support throughout the process?
I always knew about Clearing because my school is really on the ball with everything and I also had long chats with my aunt about it. After I got my A Level results in English Literature, Film Studies and Sociology, I called the Clearing phone number at Greenwich. The advisers were so calm and easy to talk to, which really helped me because I was quite flustered at first. They got me to redo my UCAS statement so it showed admissions tutors why I was interested in Film Studies.
What was the main reason for choosing the course you chose?
I really love films anyway but the enthusiasm of my Film Studies teacher at school made me really passionate about the subject. That’s when I started thinking about pursuing it beyond A Level.
Did you find a place to live easily?
Yes. I rented a room privately in my first year then moved into a house share after that through someone my aunt knew.
How has your time at university been? Have you enjoyed your course?
I love my time at Greenwich – I especially enjoy debating with other students about films and picking the brains of the lecturer. The university also gives you so many opportunities to make contact with people in the industry you’re interested in. You get to meet and learn from lots of professionals and alumni. I feel that being at Greenwich has really set me up to succeed in life.
What would be your top tip for students in the lead up to Results Day?
Know the subject you want to do and why you want to do it. Try to stay calm when you call the Clearing phone line. The person on the other end is there to help so don’t feel frazzled. And don’t worry – it will all be fine!
