Lewis and Rachel both used UCAS Clearing to get onto courses at Ulster University.

What degree did you initially apply for and where?

I had originally applied for Chemistry MSci with my back up option being Pharmaceutical Science.

How did you feel when you entered the Clearing process?

I actually had to ask my insurance choice to release me into Clearing. I entered the Clearing process three days after my results came out and by then I had already chosen a degree at Ulster that I wanted to apply for through Clearing.

How did you find the Clearing process at Ulster University?

I felt as though the Clearing process was very smooth. As soon as I entered Clearing I informed Ulster and they picked me up right away. I don’t remember there being any issues.

What course did you get through Clearing and was this totally different to what you were expecting to do at university?

I got into Accountancy and Law and it is very different to what I was expecting to do. As I had applied to a pure science degree, which involved a lot of different lab work, Accountancy and Law is a very different course.

If you could give a tip to someone entering Clearing, what would it be?

The best tip I could give is just not to feel pressured into picking a course you are unsure of, or rushing into any decisions. The decision shapes what you are going to be spending the next 3 or 4 years of your life doing, so make sure it’s something you will enjoy.

Would you recommend Ulster University to other students?

I would recommend Ulster to anyone. I think the staff are very friendly and really make an effort to make sure you are doing as well as you can and I think the quality of teaching is very high.

How did your first year of university turn out?

I thoroughly enjoyed my first year at uni and although my choice of degree through Clearing was massively different to my original choice, I can honestly say I cannot imagine enjoying Chemistry as much as I have enjoyed Accountancy and Law! The highlight of my first year was the friends I made on my course. There have been many opportunities to meet different people and get to know them as the class size is small.

How did you feel when you entered the Clearing process?

Really nervous. My A-level results were a massive shock so I wasn’t at all prepared for Clearing. I felt like I’d blown my chance and I would end up doing a degree I didn’t want to do.

How did you find the Clearing process at Ulster University?

Clearing is a stressful process because all the information is limited and vague and all you want is all the answers right now. However, once I had decided on the subject I wanted to pursue, I was then able to speak with the Course Director who helped me make a completely informed decision and be sure it was right for me.

This was extremely reassuring at the time because it made me feel like I actually had a choice and wasn’t just picking what was set in front of me for the sake of it.

What course did you get through Clearing and was this totally different to what you were expecting to do at university?

I entered in Pharmaceutical Bioscience, which was originally one of my insurance choices, so it wasn’t too far off what I had expected to be studying. I knew I would still enjoy it as it was still the area where my interests lie.
