Clearing Success Story – Steve, University of Chichester
Steve, from Hull, used Clearing to get onto a Sports & Exercise Science course at the University of Chichester.
What circumstances led you to entering Clearing?
I didn't decide to go to university until late June and that meant if I wanted to head to university that year, I would have to apply through Clearing.
Did you do any preperation or research before Results Day?
I went on a campus tour to look at the surroundings and see whether Chichester University would be the best one to pick. I also looked at the details of the course on the website to make sure this was the course I wanted to do.
Did anyone help you through Clearing?
My parents were great support in helping me through Clearing. The careers adviser I was seeing back home also helped me choose the right university and course that would fit me best to reach my career aspirations.
How did you find out what courses were available?
I looked on UCAS and on the University of Chichester website for their Clearing page, which had a list of all of the courses they still had spaces for.
What was the main reason for choosing the course you chose?
I love sport and I am looking to become a performance analyst in football. This course was a perfect choice to place me on the correct path to my career aspirations.
Did you attend a Clearing Open Day? If so, how did you find it?
I attended a campus tour a month before Results Day and found it very useful as it allowed me to see what the university was like and get a real good feel for the place and the people who work there. It also allowed me explore Chichester since I stayed down for couple of days and really loved the surroundings.
Did you find a place to live easily?
Yes! As soon as I was accepted into the University of Chichester on Results Day, I rang up the accommodation reception and was placed into accommodation straight away.
How has your time at university been? Have you enjoyed your course?
I have loved being at the University of Chichester, every single moment has been incredible. The course has been lots of fun and has been able to challenge me to achieve the best of my ability. The university is so friendly, I felt right coming here.
Personal factors has made uni life very difficult, but the support you get from staff and students, especially the amazing friends I've made, has helped me so much even at the most difficult of times. The thing that makes this university extra special is the student support and wellbeing staff. They are easy to get appointments with, or you can head to their drop-in sessions and are beyond helpful in any situation.
What would be your top tip for students in the lead up to Results Day?
Stay calm, make sure you have everything prepared and don't worry if you haven't quite made the requirements as the university can still make exceptions just below the requirements. Once you've been accepted, look for the uni's freshers group page on Facebook and start to find other people who will be on your course and who you may be living with as this is a great icebreaker in getting to know everyone and makes it less scary when seeing them in person. And good luck with everything, you'll make a great choice in coming to the University of Chichester!
