On our BSc Criminology and Social Policy degree you will develop a detailed understanding of the causes of crime and classic and contemporary approaches to crime prevention, as well as the impact of social policy on problems such as poverty, inequality and social exclusion. Through studying criminology and social policy you will learn to answer some of the most pressing issues facing contemporary societies, such as: Why do people commit particular crimes and what effects does crime have on individuals, communities and society in general? Can crime be reduced or prevented and, if so, what role do the police, the criminal justices system and policy makers play in tackling crime and social harm? Why does poverty, inequality and discrimination persist in modern society? Why do some social policies improve the lives of certain groups and not others? Our Criminology and Social Policy degree brings together theories and methods used to understand social issues relating to crime, deviance and inequality and equips students to critically evaluate the role of policing, criminal justice and offender rehabilitation in addressing the impact of crime on society. By studying criminology and social policy together, students are introduced to key debates in both disciplines and explore how they interact and overlap. Throughout the course you will explore issues of social justice and learn about the ways in which policy and practice can be used to support and protect some of the most vulnerable groups in society.
