Course summary

Why Law? This professionally focused course is your route to a successful career in law. As you would expect, the course is rigorous and engaging, for outcomes that are highly rewarding. You enter the course on the four-year Master of Law and Practice (MLP) professional route. The four-year MLP route gives you exemption from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the second vocational stage of training required for qualification as a solicitor. This route satisfies all your academic requirements and entitles you to proceed directly to a training contract with a legal firm. This route of study allows you access to tuition fee loans and other financial support, saving the need to personally fund a separate LPC course on top of your LLB (Hons. However, you may move to the three-year LLB (Hons) route after Year 2 if you choose to. If you take the LLB (Hons) route, you'll have a qualifying law degree for the purposes of training to be a solicitor or barrister, subject to completion of a separate professional practice course and training contract or pupillage. How will you learn? You will learn through practical application and delivered lectures, workshops, seminars and group work sessions. * You’ll gain a firm understanding of legal principles and core legal concepts. * You’ll be able to start focusing on the topics that interest you in your second and third years, when you can choose from a range of specialised modules. * Our Partners in Law scheme is a part of the excellent range of networking opportunities that gives you opportunities to engage with both local and national law firms. We can provide you with networking, mentoring and training opportunities through our links with regional and internationally renowned legal firms. * You may decide to take up the opportunity to be part of our Legal Advice Clinic, where you will work closely with practising solicitors and help them with real cases.* *Available from Year 2 and subject to successfully completing a competency assessment. IMPORTANT NOTICE If you are thinking of becoming a solicitor please read the following statement which we received in April 2017 from the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The SRA specifies the qualification requirements for solicitors. “The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has announced it will be introducing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), the earliest date for introduction is Autumn 2021. This will be a national assessment for anyone who wants to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. It will provide a fair and consistent assessment for all candidates regardless of whether they have taken a law degree or qualified through new routes like the solicitor apprenticeship. If you have already started your law degree, or will do so before the SQE is introduced, you will be able to finish and qualify in the same way as before or qualify under the new system. The SRA is providing information and guidance about how to qualify in the new system so keep checking its website. Please find more details on the SRA's website here.
