Course summary

How will Covid-19 affect this course?

This course will start online and may then continue on campus depending on the latest coronavirus policies.

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too.At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Mathematics and Music.Stravinsky once said, 'The musician should find in mathematics a study as useful to him as the learning of another language is to a poet.' Our combined degreeprogramme in Mathematics and Music offers the opportunity to study these two distinctive disciplines, benefiting from the synergies between these two ‘highcognition’ subjects. In year one in Mathematics you will study core material in calculus and algebra while in subsequent years you can begin to tailor your programme according to your own strengths or interests. For instance, you can specialise in pure or applied mathematics, or explore probability and modelling. You will study in an intellectually stimulating environment amongst mathematicians producing world-leading research.Music at Keele is a hub of world-class musicologists, composers and performers, including specialists in film and TV music, contemporary classical music, world music and pop. You’ll have opportunities to perform with orchestras, choirs, ensembles and bands, and to attend free concerts, gigs and workshops by world-leading musicians. You’ll also have access 24/7 to our purpose-built practice rooms, recording and project studios, and to an extensive music library.Mathematics graduates pursue a wide variety of careers, including; accountancy, actuarial training, aircraft engine design, data analyst, defence modelling, Formula 1 car design, operational research and software developer.Graduates in Music follow careers in media production, finance and banking, law, publishing, broadcast marketing and consultancy. You could go on to work as a teacher, performer, composer, music therapist, community musician, or sound technician, or in games design, film, radio and television. You may also choose to pursue postgraduate study at Master's or doctoral level.
