9. The First Modern Factory

Although the identity of the first modern factory is disputed, what many historians do agree on is that it was built at some time during the 18th Century. Despite this, Matthew Boulton's Soho Manufactory in Birmingham is perhaps most widely regarded as the first modern factory. With the discovery of steam power occurring within the same century, the 1700s can surely be seen as the dawn of modern factories, and as such, a key moment in the history of Manufacturing Engineering.
