The Course


Advanced Structural Engineering allows you to study a very flexible range of core and optional courses to improve employability across global sectors. You study academic theory and apply learning to areas such as mechanical, civil, aerospace, automotive and energy to suit your specific interests and employability needs.. You can study advanced composite materials, lightweight structures and engineering optimisation, risers and hydrodynamics, risk and finite elements. Upon graduation your skills and practical problem solving ability can be applied to numerous sectors which include; civil and construction, aerospace, renewables, oil and gas and consultancy.

Courses include a mix of compulsory and optional modules in: Mathematical Optimisation, Lightweight Structures, Risers Systems and Hydrodynamics, Engineering Risk and Reliability Analysis, Finite Element Methods, Individual Project in Advanced Structural Engineering, Advanced Composite Materials, Structural Vibrations, Offshore Structural Design

You are ideally placed to take advantage of a city of engineers as Aberdeen is a major world energy centre with over 900 oil and gas related companies ranging from multinationals to consultancies located in and around the city. You benefit from international academics with professional experience from this industry and others to support your studies with industry relevant challenges.

The School of Engineering has multidisciplinary links across its research portfolio and there is a constant exchange of knowledge with industry. Research groups include Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanics of Fluids, Soils and Structures, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering. You are welcome to attend events and seminars in the school and networking events within the city. You can also take advantage of relevant societies and a wide range of excellent practical facilities to support your studies.
