Course Summary

This hands-on course combines architecture and civil engineering modules to help you explore all these, as well as the form and appearance of buildings and their environmental impact.

Architectural engineering brings together the creativity of building design and the precision of engineering analysis with the skills of construction, management and finance. It’s a fascinating, multi-faceted career and one in which you could flourish.

You’ll build architectural skills through studio work, project presentations and an extensive structural design project. There’s also the option to spend a sandwich year working in an industry placement.


Architectural engineers apply engineering principles to the planning, design and construction of buildings and other structures. It can encompass elements of other disciplines, including mechanical and electrical engineering.

As a graduate you’ll know how to blend the knowledge, problem-solving skills and practical know-how of civil engineering with the creativity and individuality of architecture. You'll also have a number of practical key skills that will make you an attractive prospect to employers, such as CAD skills, sustainability awareness and a sound knowledge of structural engineering principles.

In summary, you’ll be equipped with the skills to provide the link between architects and civil engineers as part of an interdisciplinary design team. Recent graduates are now structural engineers, civil engineers and project engineers.
