Course Summary

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Biochemistry and Neuroscience.Biochemistry and Neuroscience is a popular combination that provides a chance to study the molecular interactions that occur in the nervous system, includinghow they contribute to health and disease. Our new teaching labs, opened in 2017, will give you the best experience of practical work, while our innovative teaching methods will ensure that you have a fantastic and worthwhile student experience. In your Biochemistry modules you will be studying life at the molecular level, investigating the most exciting areas of contemporary life science and medical research. In your Neuroscience modules you will focus on the nervous system, from molecular interactions to brain disease and behaviour. Biochemistry and Neuroscience make an ideal combination because biochemistry provides the cellular and molecular framework on which to build the complexities of the structure and function of the nervous system in health and disease. In addition you can study a four year degree by taking an industrial placement between the second and third year, or by taking an international year. When you graduate, the broad and detailed understanding of biochemistry and neuroscience you will have developed at Keele will open up a world of appealing career options. You could choose to work in a directly related field, perhaps as a medical bioscientist, research scientist, toxicologist or science teacher. Alternatively you might branch out and become a health and safety inspector, training standards officer, science writer or technical author. The applied nature of the programme will equip you with a range of transferable employability skills of relevance to careers in the Biosciences as well as in other graduate careers where numeracy and an objective scientific approach to problem solving are demanded.
