Course Summary

Overview

The Diploma in Industrial Training, which is available with all our Chemical Engineering courses, allows students the chance to work in the chemical and process industry before completing their final year(s) of study. The course structure is the same as followed by the MEng/BEng course. Students need to apply and be accepted for a place in industry in order to qualify for the DIT award.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Teaching and Learning

The overall approach in the course to teaching and learning is a student-centred one, which is designed to encourage students to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and development as the course progresses. The main focus is on active learning through experimentation and design.

The requisite competencies related to Subject Mastery are acquired and developed through lectures, tutorials, group work, case studies, design projects and research projects (Stages Three to Five). The practical component of each course reinforces the development of subject-specific skills through a combination of projects, laboratory work, computer-based design packages and applications and industrial visits. The departmental Student Learning Resource Centre supplements relevant reference materials available in the central Library.

Assessment

The assessment policy for the course incorporates a range of assessment types. Formative tests are scheduled during courses to provide feedback on performance and are used to inform further development. Continuous assessment during courses and summative assessment at the conclusion of courses both contribute to the overall assessment and are used to measure achievement in specified learning outcomes formally. Assessment for B40IA Industrial Placement module is based on submitted coursework throught the placement and an end of year literature report on a topic agreed between the host industry partner, DIT co-ordinator at HWU and the student.

Understanding, knowledge and subject-specific skills are assessed by a variety of means such as class tests, laboratory exercises, coursework assignments, unseen written examinations, laboratory reports, group and individual projects and presentations. Personal Abilities are reviewed primarily by site visit reports, transferable skills and laboratory exercises, performance in presentations, projects. Other skills are not formally assessed. Approaches to assessment are continually reviewed. Specific details about methods of assessment are provided in the appropriate course descriptors.
