Course Summary


The 2019 NSS results placed chemical engineering at Heriot-Watt as 1st in Scotland, based on the average response across all questions submitted by students.

Our MEng Chemical Engineering and Diploma in Industrial Training provides students with both the theory and practical application expected by industry. We have strong links with professional communities, allowing us to enhance the career prospects of our graduates.

Programme structure

The Diploma in Industrial Training, which is available with all our chemical engineering courses, allows students the chance to work in the chemical and process industry before completing their final year(s) of study. The course structure is the same as followed by the MEng/BEng course. Students need to independently apply and be accepted for a place in industry in order to qualify for the DIT award. Places in industry are very competitive and as such cannot be guaranteed.

Our course gives you a sound understanding of both the chemical and process engineering fundamentals that you need to become a professional chartered engineer. In addition to a grounding in science, maths and engineering, our students acquire practical abilities that are highly sought after by industry.

The MEng with DIT course is a six-year degree which shares the same first three years with the BEng programme. For BEng students, the 4th year is spent working in industry, before returning to study for one more year. For MEng students, the placement is preferable taken after four years of study, before again retuning for one more year at university.

For MEng students, specialist and core chemical engineering subjects are studied in the final year, along with an extensive research project. Final year MEng students also undertake a commercial tender exercise, working in multi disciplinary groups, to take on the role of a design house pitching for business to our industrial advisory board.


The MEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering is fully accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) on behalf of the Engineering Council. All students are provided with a student membership of the IChemE, which is paid for by the department.
