Course Summary

This course is based in the School of Literature and Languages. The lively and creative atmosphere in the School will harness your enthusiasm for literature, and our renowned passion for imparting professional skills will prepare you for a range of careers. Studying literature and film encourages you to become a reflective, sensitive and active reader and viewer. You will think carefully about literary texts and films, about what it means to interpret written and cinematic works, and the importance of literature and cinema in history and society. You will acquire extensive knowledge of literary texts and discourses, learning the critical skills to analyse these works and developing the cultural vocabulary to communicate your ideas about them. You will be introduced to a range of thought-provoking critical and theoretical approaches to literature and film. You will also discover historical, social and psychological perspectives which will enhance your understanding of literary works and cinema, allowing you to place them in their proper historical, international and cultural contexts. Our English literature courses will provide you with a range of valuable skills to prepare you for a variety of careers. Recent graduates have entered employment in roles such as: Video Editor; Editorial Assistant; Commercial Graduate; Junior Project Manager; Teacher of English; Account Manager; Social Media Account Manager and Purchasing Assistant.
