Course summary

The MSc in Sound and Music Computing responds to a growing need for engineers and computer scientists trained in sound and music processing. The course aims to provide its graduates with a deep understanding of today's leading music technologies, to inspire them to become pioneers in developing future technologies.

Suitable for continuing students or those with existing professional experience.

Developed by the acclaimed Centre for Digital Music (C4DM).

Gain the knowledge and skills required for careers in the technical aspects of audio production, sound engineering or broadcasting.

What you'll study

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the design and software development process for music recording, analysis and synthesis, in home, studio and live performance environments.

You will study how musical sound is processed by the mind and brain - crucial for developing creative tools and intuitive interfaces, as well as the creative production of new music. You will also be introduced to state-of-the-art methods for the analysis of music data.

You will then choose a stream to specialise in, to further develop your professional profile.

Your lectures and seminars will be supported by hands-on computing and laboratory work.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and written examinations.

The final project is examined on the basis of a written report, a formal oral presentation, and a demonstration of the piece of software developed by the student.
