Solent’s fashion graphics programme is ideally suited to graphic design or illustration students who want to progress their skills while specialising in fashion and fashion promotion. Applicants should have previously studied a creative subject and have a portfolio of work to show at interview. Our innovative fashion graphics degree combines academic study of fashion with practical design training to give you the technical skills and artistic grounding required to express ideas through graphic design. This highly creative course encourages students to explore a range of graphic design techniques. Students are able to hone their design skills using Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, while at the same time being encouraged to develop a strong awareness of fashion industry practice, brand identity and interactive media. To aid development of their creative skills, students have free access to our media academy. This facility includes Mac suites with the latest Adobe Creative software, photographic studios and large-format printers. Students will also have access to a Mimaki digital fabric printer. The course syllabus is supplemented by a varied programme of lectures by visiting industry professionals. Students have recently benefitted from talks by Caryn Franklin (TV presenter and i-D editor); Alex Brownless (Artsthread); Hannah Wiltshire and Rachel Taylor (head designers of Fat Face); and Terry Mansfield (CEO, National Magazines). Students on this course can also get involved in retail activities at Re:So, Solent’s stunning student-run store located in a busy shopping centre. Re:So sells a unique mix of fashion, accessories, publications, furniture and art produced by the University’s students and graduates. The store’s upper floor ‘learning zone’ has hosted guest speakers from the fashion industry, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions – all with an emphasis on developing student retail, enterprise and employability skills. The curriculum is built around insights into the fashion industry and practical graphic design training, providing graduates with the skills required to succeed. Graduates have gone on to work in the fashion industry in roles such as graphic designers, illustrators, picture editors, visual merchandisers, photographers, web designers, fashion show producers and fashion buyers.
To help get you up to speed, this one-year foundation course provides all the creative, technical and study skills needed for entry onto a degree-level art, design or fashion course. Upon completion, you will be able to progress onto a range of art-, design- and fashion- related courses here at Solent. The course begins with a five-week group project. This enables students to mix with like-minded peers and helps them to settle in quickly. This project also helps students to decide which area they might like to follow at a later stage. The following ten weeks are spent introducing students to the world of art, design and fashion. This includes design history, vocabulary, methods and academic foundation. This ten-week block will also give students the opportunity to learn and apply two-dimensional and three-dimensional visualisation techniques, giving them the tools required to conduct their final project. This final project takes place in the last fifteen weeks of the course and is based around the specific discipline that the student will go on to study. The project will be supported by tuition in visual presentation techniques, enabling students to communicate their concepts, development processes and final proposals. Students will also receive instruction in verbal communication and presentation techniques, increasing their confidence in pitching design ideas.
