Course Summary

The BA (Hons) English Literature at Coventry University is a course for students who want to further explore the major literary periods that they will have studied in their pre-degree-level studies, but who also want to be introduced to new and diverse areas of the subject, which will allow them to specialise in a range of exciting, emerging areas of the subject. These typically include such areas as, regional studies and spatiality (including the literature of the English Midlands), fantasy and speculative fictions, African-American literature, Chicana/o and US Latina/o literature, anglophone world literatures, literatures of the American West, literatures of disability, and experimental literatures. Although providing extensive opportunities to study English Literature of earlier periods, the course arguably concentrates more on modern and contemporary literatures. The course will take as its motif an idea that has proved popular for English degrees in the Celtic nations and in the South West of England - a focus on regionality, place and spatiality - but which many other Literature courses in the UK outside of these areas have concentrated upon relatively little, and focuses on literatures which give an insight into relationships 'from the local to the global'. This will involve an emphasis on the literature of everything from the regional-specific literature of the English Midlands – a significant area of the subject in which no other provider is currently specialising - to the foci on the anglophone world literatures already alluded to.Key course benefits;- A chance to exhibit work in the annual Degree Shows.- Books and trips paid for, subject to eligibility, through the Flying Start scheme.- The chance to develop event management skills by taking part in a final-year public engagement event.- A chance to develop a dynamic online presence through creating an individual A Domain of One’s Own website, which allows graduates to present prospective employers with an online portfolio of their degree-level work.
