Course summary

The philosophy of the MA Photography programme is to pioneer an erudite exploration of and experimentation with, the concept and practice of photography.

You are encouraged to experiment, challenge and utilise the medium as a cross-disciplinary, multimodal practice employed as a way of deciphering the contemporary world.

You will be introduced to a range of current photographic concepts and methodologies, learn to contextualise your practice and apply philosophical, experimental strategies to resolve projects into different outputs such as publications, exhibitions, and digital platforms.

Photography students are invited each year to submit proposals to the prestigious Studio Vortex workshop in Arles, France, run by acclaimed Magnum photographer, Antoine d’Agata.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out through coursework, both written practical and presented.

There is a 4,000-word theoretical essay with poster presentation in Semester 1, and a 5,000-word report in Semester 3, which accompanies the practical work.

There are no exams on this course. Students are formatively assessed throughout a module. Summative assessment takes place at the end of a module, which includes presentation of the work to the assessment team.

Career Opportunities

Our students are taught transferable skills and professional practice. Although the course is interdisciplinary, it is situated within the Arts sector, and therefore, many students develop careers in the cultural sector as practitioners, writers, and researchers.
