Course summary
Overview
An MSc could really improve your chances of progressing from working as a midwife to a matron or specialist role. Building on the skills and knowledge from your PG Diploma in Midwifery, you can now apply these to a completing a dissertation. You’ll have the opportunity to influence an area of current practice, using the latest clinical evidence to suggest changes to improve the quality of a service. As you’ll choose your own dissertation option, you can focus on an area you’re passionate about. During this programme you’ll develop your critical thinking and analytical skills while learning how to use new research to support your clinical role.
Course detail
The dissertation is the only module on this course. It’s an opportunity to compare a current process with the guidelines and new evidence in this area to improve a service. You’ll choose your own project, which can be based on an element of clinical practice you’d like to improve or explore an issue that your employer has identified. Your other option is to carry out a systematic literature review on a topic of your choice. The pathway is made up of one 60-credit module, which you will complete in one year. A designated supervisor will support your project work throughout the course.
Teaching and assessment
This course is project based and predominantly involves self study. You’ll be assigned an experienced supervisor who will support you and provide feedback as you draft your dissertation and provide feedback. You’ll have monthly meetings with your supervisor. These can be face-to-face, or via Skype or phone if you’re not based in London. Although you may need to travel to London during your course to access the library or other facilities, all of our core texts and articles are available online.
Career prospects
A completed MSc will indicate employers that you have the abilities and characteristics required of midwives working in more advanced positions. As such, some graduates move on to senior midwifery roles, while others pursue a clinical-academic career.
