Course summary

What is Academic Practice PgCert?

The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) will provide you with the opportunity to reflect on your role in higher education, in the company of others facing similar challenges. You’ll explore the latest teaching practices in higher education and how these are applicable in your own context.

We’ll support you to develop your philosophical position and establish your own style – honed by the demands of your subject, the learning needs of your students and the constraints of the learning environment.

The course will also support you in developing your ability to reflect critically on your practice, drawing on theory as well as feedback from others, including your students.

Study style

Each module includes a 2-day teaching block and 5 workshops. There’s also a fully online e-tutoring component.

Assessment is 100% by coursework and for each module involves both observations of your teaching/supporting learning practice and reflective narrative of your practice, including an action plan.

The PGCAP is also now a component of an Academic Professional Degree Apprenticeship, which would involve further training and support, and an end-point assessment.

Possible careers

Graduates from this course can go on to work as:

  • Lecturer in higher education institutions
  • Librarian working with higher education students
  • Lecturer teaching higher education students in a further education context.
