Course summary
At Keele University, we’re proud to be consistently ranked in the Top 3 UK universities for student satisfaction, which is testimony to the safe, supportive and welcoming campus we hope you’ll soon call home. Our programme is recognised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), and can lead to a range of exciting careers in business as well as a number of exemptions from their professional exams. You will develop expertise in accounting and finance, through both theoretical and practical study, together with the intellectual curiosity to enable you to make an immediate and effective contribution in your chosen career. Our computer laboratories are equipped with industry-leading software such as Bloomberg, STATA, Thomson Reuters and Sage Accounting Software, providing you with an opportunity to use work-based technologies which will give you the confidence and the skills needed to make you stand out from the crowd. You can further build on this experience by choosing either a placement year, international year or entrepreneurship year between years two and three of your studies. You will study accountancy with a specialism in finance, exploring the design and use of accounting and financial systems and how they are affected by individuals, organisations, markets and society. Core financial and management accounting modules will be supported with the opportunity to study specialist topics such as taxation, corporate governance and audit. Finance modules are designed to introduce and explore the theories leading to the design of financial institutions, the services they provide and the products they sell. Observational and analytical skills will be developed and practiced throughout your study. A high percentage of business leaders have finance backgrounds, and accounting has one of the highest graduate employment rates. With the increasing internationalisation of business and the capital markets, you will have extensive opportunities. You might work as a chartered accountant, chartered certified accountant, chartered public finance accountant or chartered management accountant. Or you might work as a commodities trader, stockbroker, management consultant, banker, financial or tax advisor or insurance broker, or go on to study at master’s or PhD level.
