Course summary

The BA Honours Acting and Performance Practice has established strong industry links and developed work placements for students through close connections with companies such as Northern Stage, Alphabetti Theatre, Live Theatre, Vivid Theatre Company and The Royal Shakespeare Company. These connections enable course tutors to continually review and refresh course content to ensure it is industry relevant. Teaching staff have extensive experience in industry and continue to work with local theatres and film companies such as Live Theatre, Arc Stockton and Northumberland Theatre Company. The course teaching is underpinned by our knowledge of industry expectations and requirements. We get a range of different workshops from superb actors, directors, practitioners and companies with national reputations. Alongside these opportunities we run a Classical Acting group to perform modern, contemporary versions of classic texts and a script lab where students can bring works in progress to be read by peers and receive feedback to develop the work further. Students are given a wide number of performance opportunities at local theatres and alternative performance spaces. We also run a comedy night ‘Slightly Inoffensive’ where students produce sketches, comedy songs and take part in improvisational comedy.

The BA (Hons) Acting and Performance Practice programme caters for those who wish to perform, write, direct, teach and work in the industry. The vocational nature of this programme ensures you will learn by doing in an environment that mirrors current industry trends. Combining intensive, practical performance training with relevant academic and creative study, this course is suited to those who are highly driven and want to succeed in what is a difficult industry. Sessions are technical and performance based that is designed to develop the skills required for a career in Performing Arts. Performance classes throughout the year help build your technique and your industry contacts. This BA (Hons) Acting and Performance Practice will prepare you for a career on the commercial and public stage within theatre, film and television. Former graduates have progressed to work professionally and been invited to participate in national and international projects and performances.
