Course summary

A nurse needs to be able to assess needs and plan, implement and evaluate care for people with acute or chronic illness – requiring communication skills and compassion as well as the range of specialist knowledge and nursing skills you will acquire from this degree. Gain experience in medical and surgical nursing, care of older people, community nursing and nursing in an acute setting. Successful completion of this course leads to the award of both an Honours degree and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered nurse, allowing you to practise as an adult nurse and in accordance with the NHS Constitution.

The NHS constitution brings together details of what staff, patients and the public can expect from the National Health Service. It sets out the principles and values that guide how the NHS should act and make decisions. The NHS Constitution states that the NHS "aspires to the highest standards of excellence and professionalism".

This course enables you to learn in a variety of ways in academic, simulated and actual practice settings. You will experience 50% of your time in practice, supervised by practitioners, who are trained to support your learning, learning to provide care and experience a diverse range of practice settings. 50% of your time will be university based, learning in the classroom, in individual study and simulated practice environments.

How will I be assessed?

The nursing team recognise the importance of assessment for student learning and have carefully considered university guidance. The courses assessment scheme aims to align with the learning outcomes and to provide a variety of assessments which consider different learning styles and give opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills with application to practice, as well as developing their academic skills. A wide range of assessment methods are used to ensure that the breadth of knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes are assessed appropriately. In addition, a range of assessment methods ensures that the students who may be more or less skilled at a particular type of assessment are given a variety of opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. The assessment process includes appropriate and constructive feedback on all coursework performance.

  • Acute in-patient mental health care
  • Community based mental health care
  • Specialist areas of practice (e.g. secure care, assertive outreach, drug and alcohol services)
  • Residential care settings

Further study:This course will be the first step in a process of lifelong learning and professional development. Once qualified, practitioners will be able to access a wide range of health and social care courses leading to specialist, master’s degree or doctoral degree qualifications
