Course summary

Key information

We offer both an MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner programme and an MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship programme depending on your funding route. These interdisciplinary postgraduate courses will prepare you to become a competent and confident Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).

Benefits of this course

Our MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice Apprenticeship programmes aim to develop your skills, knowledge and capabilities as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) within your specialty, sector or setting.

They have been designed by experienced and senior clinicians to equip you with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes (behaviours) to meet the requirements of the Multi-Professional Framework of Advanced Clinical Practice introduced by Health Education England in 2017.

The programmes have been designed to meet the four pillars of advanced practice:

clinical practice
leadership and management

You will have the opportunity to work within your practice or other healthcare settings and learn from lecturers who are experienced advanced clinical practitioners actively engaged in clinical practice.

You can select to apply for one of the available exit points for this course.

Master of Science (MSc)

Who is this course for?

These multi-professional programmes are aimed at practitioners aspiring to develop and work at an advanced level of practice.

They also provide experienced advanced clinical practitioners with the opportunity to evidence, and where necessary develop, the core capabilities and specialty specific competencies across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice (clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research) at master’s level.

Accredited by the Royal College of Nursing.

These MSc programmes are designed to develop you into a competent and confident Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) and to equip you with a range of transferable capabilities across the four pillars of ACP.

On successful completion of the programme, you will be ready to undertake an ACP role within your speciality, sector or setting. In some specialities, sectors or settings (such as emergency medicine) additional training and/or credentialing is required.

Future career options include senior ACP, trainee consultant and consultant practitioner roles, senior leadership roles, clinical educator roles and research roles.

You could also consider advancing to doctoral education or pursuing a clinical academic career pathway.

You may also undertake further study related to specific pillars of advanced clinical practice such as education programmes (e.g. post-graduate teaching qualifications), leadership programmes (e.g. master’s level awards in Health Management) or research programmes (e.g. master’s in clinical research).
