Course summary

Our Advanced Forensic Practice MSc is the first course in the UK that meets the United Kingdon Association of Forensic Nurses and Paramedics (UKAFN) Advanced Standards in Education and Training (ASET) within forensic practice. The ASET standard is also badged by the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (FFLM). Our course is designed by and for health professionals, who are tasked with forensically examining alleged victims of sexual assault, gathering and recording evidence for court.

With court cases relying on forensic evidence, there’s an increasing need for people who are responsible for the health, well-being, and forensic examination of detainees in custody.

This innovative Masters course provides an in-depth training and understanding of how to gather and record relevant forensic evidence, which can be presented in court. You'll be provided with the fundamental principles of forensic science along with being assessed in giving oral and written evidence for court.

The course has been designed for and by health professionals in collaboration with experts from our School of Law. You’ll be able to take advantage of our unique facilities, including a full-size mock courtroom, and a crime scene house with CCTV and an observation room.

The course runs in parallel with our Advanced Forensic Practice (Sexual Assault Health Professional) - MSc, with opportunities to choose modules from either route in your second year to obtain a dual qualification.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: PgDip Advanced Forensic Practice (Custody).

There are two types of assessments, also called formative and summative.

You’ll have formal assessments at the end of each module - these might include practice (practical) assessments, essays, exams, portfolios or Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that contribute to your final mark. Your competencies will also be assessed in your practice areas.

The course is designed to support health professionals and develop advanced practice skills within their current role.

There’s also the option for further academic research upon completion of the MSc.
