This MSc programme is aimed at students with materials or engineering backgrounds who want to work in the fast-expanding area of polymer science – a field with real-life significance and practical application. The course material incorporates elements of engineering, chemistry, physics and materials science.
You'll work on a project with one of our internationally respected research teams and gain solid practical and theoretical skills to boost your chosen career trajectory.
- Be taught by academics leading advancements in polymer science.
- Gain significant practical experience in our world-class processing facilities, including the NanoVision Centre for Advanced Microscopy.
- Professionally accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), demonstrating that our curriculum is closely aligned to industry needs.
What you'll study
This MSc stems from the university's research strengths in the innovative area of polymers and composites. You’ll be immersed in our research culture, joining one of our research teams to complete an independent research project related to these areas.
Your modules will prepare you for your research project, while also increasing your knowledge of the structure and behaviours of different polymer materials. You will cover topics in nanocomposites, nanotechnology and nanomedicine. You’ll learn how to decide which materials are most suitable for the design of different products, and how to take the environmental impact of these materials into account.
Facilities
School facilities include:
- Confocal Laser Scanning and Super Resolution Microscopy Lab
- Hip Wear Simulator
- Mechanical Testing Facilities
- NanoVision Centre
- Polymer Chemistry Laboratory
- Spectroscopy Facility
- Thermal Analysis Facility
Teaching
You’ll be taught by academics at the top of their fields, with specialist knowledge in topics such as bio-based polymers and composites, energy generation and storage, and sensors and rubber.
Our academic research feeds into our teaching at all levels, ensuring you share in the latest advancements.
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and laboratory sessions, as well as completing coursework for academic feedback.
You will be assigned an Academic Advisor who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.
