Course summary

Study advanced social work and develop the research and leadership skills you need to enhance your social work practice. Learning alongside students from other professions, and from all over the world, the interdisciplinary approach of this course allows you to explore social work issues in relation to your own practice. You will learn the latest, most relevant research methods and undertake highly-influential research in your area of interest. You will learn about ethical issues and dilemmas relating to social work. You'll have the opportunity to critically engage with the challenges and opportunities of inter-professional collaboration and the role that organisational culture and change plays in the way social work is shaped and delivered.

This course is ideal if you have been employed in any area of social work, including working with young people, people with disabilities, families, people in poverty, and within the criminal justice system. You will be encouraged to share your experience and knowledge with other postgraduate students, both from social work and other professions including teachers, health professionals, and community workers.

Careers

With research now considered an important area of social work, this course is an excellent opportunity to develop your research skills and learn the latest research methods. During the course, you will either research an area relevant to your current work or we can arrange for you to undertake research with a charity, local authority or similar organisation, which may also result in networking and employment opportunities. This course will provide you with a high level of knowledge to bring to your chosen career in social work or a related field. It is also an excellent stepping stone for taking the next step in your career, whether that involves applying for promotion or undertaking a doctorate. The scope for applying advanced social work skills is vast - social workers are employed in a wide variety of settings, beyond what might traditionally be considered 'social work.'
