AMERICAN STUDIES

America is distinct among modern countries because of the stories it tells about itself; as the land of the free, and as a site of endless possibilities. A degree in American Studies asks you to uncover the stories that are not being told and to interrogate the world’s superpower using a variety of disciplinary approaches. This degree will equip you with the tools you need to make sense of the world and to learn from a decidedly decolonised curriculum that privileges the histories and cultures of marginalised and oppressed peoples. Our academics are leading researchers in American Cinema, History, Literature, and Politics and we bring our expert knowledge to bear in challenging and rewarding classes, on topics including the civil rights movement, contemporary presidential politics, and the literature of the Deep South.

You will explore areas including:

  • American film, journalism, literature, and music
  • histories of race, colonialism and oppression
  • the frontier at home and abroad in the context of politics and foreign relations
  • issues of ethnicity, gender, and class.

FILM, RADIO AND TELEVISION

Studying Film, Radio and Television at Christ Church gives you the opportunity to learn about, and work in, a variety of media.

Working both individually and as part of a team, you will explore theory and practice as you develop the production and analytical skills you need to succeed in the emerging media landscape. Using industry standard equipment and facilities, you will be well equipped for entry into the media industries. You will have access to:

  • Our refurbished £350,000 Television studio and gallery
  • Film and post production equipment including the Arri Amira and Black Magic digital film cameras, the DJI Osmo, AVID and Pro Tools
  • Four dedicated radio studios, a student radio station CSR (Canterbury Student Radio) run in a collaboration between FRTV students in CCCU and the University of Kent

The programme has employability at its heart, and is taught by experienced and passionate tutors. In addition, visiting industry professionals will offer you guidance and advice through workshops and dedicated masterclasses.

You will explore areas including:

  • film production
  • radio production
  • television production
  • critical theory and the creative industries.
