Course summary

American Studies

American Studies explores the United States from distinct but inter-related viewpoints. You will learn about the politics, culture, and history of the world’s last superpower. As well as celebrating the country, you will interrogate and critique American mythologies. American Studies is a fascinating subject because the United States is one of the most diverse places in the world, with a rich history, a vibrant political culture, world-changing literature and film, and global influence. The American Studies course offers a variety of modules in three strands: history, literature and media, and foreign policy and politics. American Studies is assessed entirely by coursework. Different modules will have different types of coursework, depending on what best suits a particular topic or discipline, but most modules will be assessed by a combination of essays, presentations, and shorter portfolio assignments.

Sociology

The course has been designed to enhance your employment prospects through the offer of modules that support particular career pathways, and a curriculum that prepares you for work as well as postgraduate study. Sociology is a fascinating subject that investigates the ways in which social life is organised, structured and experienced. There are many good reasons to study Sociology with us. Students say our teaching is excellent, and that they feel supported, engaged and inspired. The course has been designed to enhance your employment prospects through modules that support particular career pathways, prepare you for the world of work, provide volunteering opportunities and the chance to reflect academically on any paid work you do. Our teaching is underpinned by research and there are excellent opportunities to get involved with research projects, both within the curriculum and through our research internship scheme. The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Ongoing assessment and verbal feedback of your performance in group work, seminar discussions, tutorial sessions when requested, and written feedback on coursework will be used as a means of formative assessment.
