Course summary

Studying an Ancient History and English Literature degree enables you to blend an exploration of distant yet influential civilisations with a rigorous investigation of the most profound literature ever written. Your attention will traverse major periods of time and diverse subjects: from the emergence of Athenian democracy to the glories of renaissance Italy, and from stage plays and English essentials to American Literature and culture. Our three-year BA Ancient History and English Literature degree helps to provide graduates with a wealth of inspiring career opportunities thanks to numerous transferable skills which are highly valued by employers. This subject area at Swansea University ranked in the top 10 for overall student satisfaction (NSS 2017). Ancient History achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 95% while English Literature is ranked 7th in the UK (REF 2014) and in the top 15 for graduate prospects (The Times Good University Guide 2018 and The Complete University Guide 2019). Some 94% of graduates employed or in further study 6 months after graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015) and 70% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18. Early modules offer a wide subject choice, allowing in depth study of Greek and Roman worlds alongside approaches to gender in English Literature, creative writing or other modern languages. This range gives you the scope to learn, discover and narrow your interests. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have the ability to tailor your degree according to your interests as you progress.During your third year you will have the opportunity to study abroad for a year at one of our many partner institutions across the world, enhancing your student experience and boosting your career prospects. Later studies may be shaped by a study trip or field project focusing on a specific region, and work placement projects teaching school children. Further teaching experience can be developed by leading workshops for the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership. Students typically develop oral and writing skills through presenting ideas in different formats. Assessment is conducted through seminars, tutorials and group presentations, as well as independent study. Teaching is informed by a vibrant and supportive research environment that unites academics, postgraduates and visiting scholars around shared subject matter. “I was one of four finalists in the Swansea Life Young Writing Category of the Dylan Thomas Prize. I held several positions in the Society of Ancient Studies which was amazing, and organised social events such as visits to sites such as Hadrian’s Wall, the British Museum, Caerleon, and Rome.” – Shaun Mudd. Our graduates have progressed to careers in sectors such as education, heritage, business, media, politics and humanitarian services. Employers have included Mercedes Benz, English Heritage and St Fagans National History Museum.
