Specifically designed for non-computing graduates wanting to upskill or change career trajectory, this 12-month course equips you with the critical knowledge, technical ability and practical skills needed to apply IT expertly to your work. Our Master’s builds on everyday experiences with technology to help you understand, evaluate and assess the core theories and emerging developments underpinning the field, then apply your learning to real-world problems. What will you study? Studying our Applied Computing and Information Technology MSc course will equip you with the core knowledge and skills around programming, computer science and information technology. You will learn about one of the most essential skills required by a computing student and that is programming. In our Programming for Applications unit, you will analyse problems and develop programs to solve these problems using case studies on real-world applications.In other areas of study, you will be introduced to Data Modelling, Management and Governance methods and techniques alongside database theory. This unit will equip you with the knowledge to use the appropriate tools to build database systems using industry standard software and apply these systems to your chosen field of interest. To diversify your skills further, our unit in Computer Networks and Security is relevant to a wide range of career pathways including software development, business and risk management and cyber or data security. This unit will introduce you to core principles of cybersecurity while providing you with the fundamentals on how computer networks operate.How will you be assessed?Your assessment will be varied and wide-ranging including worksheets practical problem solving tasks case studies presentations written reports and viva-voce (voice) examinations. The exact assessment undertaken varies with details available in the unit information forms. You may also undertake formative (non-credit bearing) assessments prior to the final assessments. This is designed to allow you to develop your skills and to take account of the feedback provided and will help you to better understand the material delivered during the course. To aid curriculum and assessment design the University uses the FHEQ credit level descriptors as points of reference for determining progression in terms of level of demand and complexity and the degree of learner autonomy involved in specific learning opportunities. CareersAs a graduate of this course you could progress on to a career as an IT consultant manager systems developer and/or programming supervisor within industries which make substantial use of computer and information technology.Other careers include IT managers or practitioners within commerce database and IT developers or system designers/analysts.
