Course summary

MSc Applied Statistics provides postgraduate instruction in the theory and methods of applied statistics. The programme is for students whose interests lie in the theory and application of statistical methods, and in methods for designing, collecting and analysing large–scale data. You will benefit from the cutting-edge research conducted in the research centres in which professors from our department hold leading positions: the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute and the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods. Our main areas of expertise include sampling, small-area estimation, census and administrative data and the analysis of 'big data'. Join the University of Southampton, ranked in the World Top 100 for Statistics and Operational Research (QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2026). Key features of the course Benefit from the research of our expert academics, whose findings feed directly into the course content. Learn how to collect and analyse quantitative social science data and apply it to real-world problems. The department hosts the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), which provides training and capacity building as well as carrying out its own research programme. Student support You’ll join a close-knit and diverse learning community, we offer an exceptional academic experience, with small-group teaching that allows you to explore topics in depth and plenty of support to ensure you achieve your potential. Further information The department is based at Highfield Campus, our oldest and largest campus, located close to Southampton Common. It's the academic heart of our University and home to social events, sports facilities and our Students' Union.
