Course summary
The architecture degree at Huddersfield has a highly distinctive approach to the subject, allowing you to explore different cultural regions and design your own innovative, beautiful, humane and sustainable architecture in response. The social nature of the course means that you’ll experience ideas and influences that are as diverse as they are creative. * There are two strands to the course, Architecture and Architecture (International). Both will give you an opportunity to explore the complex regional, cultural, ethical and environmental issues that’ll underpin your development as an architect. The International option provides an opportunity to travel to a non-European location, to study architecture and culture first hand before designing buildings that are truly responsive to people and place. Recent visits have included Vietnam, Malaysia, India and China.* * When you graduate from the course you’ll be able to work in a very wide range of architectural practices and will be sought after for your practical ability and creative flair. You’ll be well prepared to work in a professional environment and ready to progress to the next stage of your architectural career. * The course is recognised by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), the body that regulates the architects’ profession in the UK. That’s good news if you’re hoping to continue on to be an architect, as you have to register with the ARB to be able to practise using the title ‘architect’ in the UK. Our course is also validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In fact, if you graduate, you’ll then gain exemption from RIBA’s Part 1 Professional Examinations. That’s the first of three examinations you need to pass to qualify and register as an architect, all of which you can undertake here at Huddersfield. So you could be well on the way towards your chosen profession. If you choose to take the International option in your final year, the extended field trip is compulsory and you’ll have to fund your own place. Just to give you an idea, the average cost of the trip in the past few years has been around £1,400 per student. Additional Costs Field Trips: Inspirational field trips to destinations of educational and cultural significance are a component of the course and will be funded by the University. If you opt for the optional European module in second year, the field trip to a European location will not be covered by the University and will be covered by the student. We estimate this to be in the region of £300/£350. For the international route of the course in the final year, an extended overseas field study trip is a compulsory component of the BA(Hons) Architecture (International) degree programme. This cost will be covered by the student and not covered by the University. Previous destinations and costs in recent years include: * Vietnam, 25 days, approx. £1,396 * China, 21 days, approx £1,451 per student Materials: You will need to supply your own materials during the course. These include sketchbooks, drawing equipment, materials for producing models and printing. The approximate cost of these items in recent years has been £500 in year one, £375 in year two and £575 in the final year. These costs may vary based on the materials you choose and the approximate costs are given as a guide only.
