Course summary

Our Architecture BA (Hons) course provides a thorough understanding of modern architectural practices from concept to development and is based around four elements: design, technologies, architectural humanities and practices. RIBA Part I is awarded on completion of the degree. Architecture is a rewarding profession and our degree is for those who want to engage with society - we see architecture as a social activity, rather than simply a technical exploration. Throughout your time here, you will develop your own voice, considering your work through the lens of arts, humanities and sciences. Thematic, vertical studios where students from all years’ work together foster an environment of enquiry and collaboration and prepare you for the realities of professional practice.

The focus is on real-world skills, and you will learn on-site through projects with local communities and from the construction of our annual exhibition pavilion. Our students have gone from Brighton into both local and internationally-renowned practices, including: Allies and Morrison, Andrés Jaque Architects, Atelier Van Lieshout, de Rijke Marsh Morgan, Junya Ishigami, Norman Foster, Sauerbruch Hutton and Atelier Bow Wow. Success in the Architecture BA (Hons) at Brighton carries exemption from the RIBA Part 1 and allows progress onto the MArch, RIBA Part 2 course, also available at the University of Brighton.

The course is primarily designed for students wishing to progress towards a career in architecture, and within the profession there are many opportunities for satisfying and rewarding work through placement with a successful studio is among the ambitions of most of our students. Students have also chosen entrepreneurial routes in the starting of their own studios or businesses. Others have taken a career in teaching and academia, with research study potential offered through the university’s doctoral college.
