Course summary

COURSE OVERVIEW

This one-year full-time/ two-year part-time course embraces entrepreneurialism, curiosity and innovation, providing you with live experiences and opportunities to cultivate a network relevant to your career aspirations.

Situated in our historic Grade 1 listed School of Art, based in Margaret Street and within the Colmore Business District, you will enjoy being a part of this vibrant community.

You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with external partners, and explore how to respond to current challenges and emerging opportunities for enterprise in the creative and cultural sector.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THE COURSE?

The Art Business course provides a combination of theoretical and practical study. You will examine some of the definitions, systems and structures of the creative industries, helping you to identify relevant roles for yourself within an evolving landscape, and considering creative enterprise in its broadest form.

An understanding of the economic and cultural value of the creative industries will be important to provide context and enable you to critically reflect on societal, political and environmental shifts that have implications for the relevant stakeholders. Challenging existing systems and structures is key in order to innovate for the future.

Located in the culturally diverse city of Birmingham in the West Midlands, the curriculum design and experiential learning will reflect your needs and opportunities. Through working on a series of projects and briefs written in consultation with external partners, you will build up a bespoke ‘portfolio’. The course will support you to develop confidence and a repertoire of flexible, responsive, adaptable and transferable skills in creative thinking, problem solving, collaboration, leadership and strategy, project management, budgeting, marketing, communication, presentation, independent research, critical and analytical thinking.

Ethical working practices will be at the heart of all modules, exploring relevant considerations around inclusivity, diversity and equality, considering how ‘good’ creative work can benefit the individual, their communities and the planet.

Anticipated progression routes are; museums, galleries, education, socially engaged practices, marketing & PR, exhibitions and events management, front-of-house roles, entrepreneurial activity, arts operation and leadership, curation, auction houses and art journalism.
