The MRes in Arts and Media is an exciting opportunity to experience research within the disciplines of art and design, performing arts and media. Our course offers you an opportunity to critically evaluate the tools of research through taught modules, and then apply these in an extensive research project in an area in which you are passionate.

Our course is in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, where there is a vibrant community of staff and students pursuing arts and media disciplines using a variety of methodologies with a plethora of outputs. The MRes is geared towards facilitating your individual research interests, and you will be matched with staff able to guide you in your explorations, research, and practical activity.

The sites where the course is taught have the facilities that you would expect to be successful in arts and media research, including specialist studio spaces together with specialist equipment, technology and software.

Teaching methods

The course will be taught through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous delivery via taught sessions, practical workshops, seminars, and tutorials. It is a feature of the learning and teaching strategy of the course that you will be given as much freedom as possible to develop work which is of direct relevance your study. Expert and specialised staff will guide you through your major research project.

Assessment

Assessment will be via written dissertations and/or exhibitions, performances, and recordings. For practice-based assessment, live events may be held virtually either synchronously (through for example, social media) or asynchronously (recorded artefacts). Similarly, assessment involving presentation may be achieved live through online technologies or recorded and submitted asynchronously. Portfolios of creative work may be submitted in a digital format as an alternative to physical equivalents.

Job prospects

Our previous graduates have used the skills gained on the course to enter the workplace in a variety of roles. Our graduates have gone into lecturing as well as the professional industries, such as choreography, theatre direction and fashion design. Several our graduates have continued onto PhD study.
